Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center

6000 Verona Rd., Verona, PA 15147
Saturday 2–3 p.m.

Meet our Animals of the Night! One-hour, structured program about Pennsylvania’s native nocturnal animals. The program includes a visit by a wildlife center resident. Residents including owls, porcupines, opossums and even skunks!

Space is limited. Please register early via email to hold your spot. The program is subject to change or cancellation due to minimum participation requirements not being met. Cancellations will be sent out via email at least 48 hours in advance. Appropriate for Grades: 2–5.

$7 per participant. $5 if 20 or more people register.

Carnegie Science Center

Girl Scouts + Science = Girl Power!
Make Carnegie Science Center apart of the Girl Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Grand Celebration! The Science Center is super cool science fun for all Daisies, Brownies, Scouts, Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassador. Rocking Carnegie Science Center this summer! GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked The World. Come and experience the science, sound, history, and cultural impact of the guitar. This exhibition will entertain, engage and enlighten all with the one of most important cultural icons: the guitar.

Carnegie Science Center is close to Downtown Pittsburgh, right next to Heinz Field and near PNC Park. We’re a short drive from the Convention Center across the amazing Roberto Clemente Bridge or an easy hike on Pittsburgh’s North Shore Riverfront Park and Trail.

Group rates start at $8 per-person with 15 or more people and includes:

The Frick Art and Historical Center

100 Years of Pittsburgh History
Explore the Frick Art & Historical Center, located on over five acres of lawns and gardens in Pittsburgh’s East End. Visit The Frick Art Museum, the Car and Carriage Museum, the greenhouse and Clayton, a beautifully restored Victorian mansion. Enjoy special Girl Scout activities including fold, punch, paste and stitch a history book about you, handle and puzzle out curious antique household items, and even dress up in vintage clothing for your own photo op!
Girls Grades: K–12

Cost: For Clayton tours: $2 per person. Advance registration required. (All other activities and museum collections are free, with no registration required.)

National Aviary Rainforest Experience (Just Added!)

August 18, 2012
2:30-4:30 pm

Girls and their families are invited to discover rainforests through the eyes of its birds. Home to nearly half of the world’s plant and animal species, we’ll examine how rainforests support ecological balance as well as global economies, and why it is important for us to conserve this valuable natural resource. You’ll experience up-close encounters with several live birds representing the rainforest community. Afterwards, you will be free to enjoy all that the National Aviary has to offer.

Program counts toward the “Animal Habitats,” “Animal Helpers” and “Voice for Animals” badges.

Those families who choose to visit the National Aviary are a 5-minute walk away from the bridging ceremony on the north side of the Roberto Clemente Bridge, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Cost: $9 per person, pre-registered, or at the gate with your girl scout wristbands. Discounted admission includes the private rainforest program and access to our exhibits and feedings.

Old Economy Village

Girl Scout Discovery Day Old Economy Village will provide Girl Scouts with an opportunity to discover and explore the buildings and artisans of this 1820 town. Historical interpreters will tell the story of the Harmonists and their buildings. They can meet Gertrude Rapp, a woman of the past, who was instrumental in starting the silk industry. Artisans will be demonstrating historic trades such as blacksmithing, cabinet making, rope making, bread baking, butter churning, spinning and silk making to name a few. In many instances the girls will be able to try or assist in the artisan’s trade.

Evening Adventure in the Woods
Join other scouts to learn about nocturnal animals and the woods at night. Break off into hiking groups and venture into the starlit forest as we discuss the stars, moon and nighttime creatures. Afterwards we’ll gather around the campfire for treats and Native American lore under a new moon.

Stop by the Pittsburgh Glass Center to make your very own glass bead or fused glass sun catcher. Free glassblowing demonstrations will be going on all day!

Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium

Point Park University

All programs at Point Park University are free, but they are age-specific and have a limit for attendees. All programs take place between 2–3 p.m. on Saturday. Reservations for Point Park University programs can be made during online registration.

Strong Women in History (Academic Hall 309)
This session will introduce girls to strong women in modern history. Participants will have a chance to learn about an individual who impacted her world and perform a short sketch of that woman. As a group we will discuss what obstacles women had to overcome, what common experiences these women shared and what we can learn from the actions these women took.

Social Media Workshop (Academic Hall 608)
Social Media is all the rage these days. From Facebook to Instagram to Pinterest, we’ll talk about some of the most fun and popular social media applications and how you can use them
to help you be a better Girl Scout, student and friend.

Cell Phone Photographer (Academic Hall 407)
Everyone has a camera phone, but can everyone take really great pictures with their phone? Yes! We’ll show you the tips and tricks for taking good cell phone pictures along with the latest and greatest apps like Instagram and Photoshop Mobile.
Limit: 15 Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors or Ambassadors

CSI Pittsburgh (Academic Hall 508)
Learn what it is like to process a mock crime scene. After a short briefing, groups will be asked to view, document and search an actual mock crime scene in the Crime Scene Lab on the fifth floor of Academic Hall, Point Park University. Search for clues, interview suspects and solve the crime in a unique facility that is part of the Forensics Program at Point Park University.
