Healthy Living
One of the most significant threats to girls’ health is low self-esteem. It can lead to stress and depression, contribute to risky behaviors like substance abuse and eating disorders, and impact school attendance and grades.
Staying fit, and taking power and pride in healthy choices enhance a girls’ feelings about her body image and overall well-being.
Through active and fun– and fact-filled Girl Scout resources, interaction with friends, and a bevy of innovative activities, girls learn to take charge in managing the physical and emotional health challenges of nutrition, exercise, diet, relationships, conflict resolution, and more. Girl Scouting provides girls with the ability to turn knowledge into experience, and then turns those experiences into healthy habits for life with these programs:
- Uniquely ME! – is an eight series of programs for girls in grades 4-8 that explores the fundamental components of self-esteem. This program can be delivered during the physical education, health, or homeroom class or after-school. Each session typically lasts for 60 minutes, although the program can be lengthened or shortened depending on the school’s time constraints. During the program sessions, girls learn about the importance of having and building their own and other’s positive self image, the differences between inner and outer beauty, positive female role models, media myths and messaging, being unique and gender bias.
- Healthy Living Sampler (4-8) – This program encourages a healthy lifestyle through the exploration and practice of healthy living activities. Activities revolve around Bullying, Diversity, Self Esteem, Financial Literacy, Nutrition and Exercise.
- Fit & Fun (K-5) – This program encourages a healthy lifestyle through positive relationships with food, consistent exercise and positive attitude. The program is designed to encourage girls in exploring and mastering the fundamentals of sports and nutrition while being introduced to Girl Scouting traditions.
