Literacy

Girl Scouts is unwavering in its commitment to literacy, especially in light of current data, which indicates a serous need for greater resources nationwide. Children who don’t develop proficiency in reading are at a greater likelihood of dropping out of school.

Articulating their greatest dreams, being well-versed in new ideas, and overcoming their biggest fears through knowledge— that’s what Girl Scouts wants for every girl; and it all begins with a strong foundation for the appreciation and mastery of language skills.

In addition to the ability to read, our educational initiative programs encompass writing, communicating with others, and processing information— all of which unleash a girl’s potential.

  • Discovery Girls (K-5) – This program helps girls develop a love of reading and encourages girls to discover themselves through literature. Biographies of inspiring women as well as books celebrating the joys of being a woman help girls realize and attain their potential. Discovery Girls is designed to enhance reading literacy skills taught in school in addition to introducing Girl Scout values.
  • The Write Way (4-8 grade) – This eight week program builds a girl’s confidence in her writing while teaching her valuable life skills. Based on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, The Write Way is designed to enhance writing skills taught in school in addition to introducing Girl Scout values. Working through the Six Traits of Writing, girls learn how to properly construct pieces of writing from beginning to end. Short stories, interactive games and other activities encourage girls to use their creativity and develop self confidence.
