GSWPA Hosts Memorial Event for Camp Birdsall Edey

Jul 02, 2010 Posted in Newsroom, Press Releases

On June 26, 2010, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania (GSWPA) hosted a memorial event at Chapman State Park to celebrate memories of Camp Birdsall Edey and to discuss plans to move forward with additional program options and outdoor program experiences. A group of both girl and adult members shared stories, sung camp songs and reviewed plans for a Camp Birdsall Edey memorabilia display. Participants left with a Camp Birdsall Edey patch and memory book. This ceremony commemorated the Girl Scouts appreciation of service by Camp Birdsall Edey, which will no longer be used as a result of the Long Range Property Plan and Study conducted in 2009.

While the Girl Scout program has had a rich tradition with outdoor programming, surveys to members and property assessments identified GSWPA-owned camp properties that are best suited to meeting the needs and interests of its current and potential, future membership. Those include summer resident camps of Camp Elliott (Volant, PA), Camp Conshatawba (near Ebensburg, PA), Camp Hawthorne Ridge (Fairview Township, PA), Camp Redwing (Renfrew, PA), Camp Singing Hills (between Oil City and Franklin, PA), and Camp Skymeadow (near Avonmore, PA). Additionally, the council owns Camp Curry Creek in Jefferson County, Camp Resting Waters in McKean County and Camp Roy Weller in Bruceton Mills, WV.
It was during the assessment process thatGSWPA and the Allegheny National Forest made the joint decision to terminate the lease at Camp Birdsall Edey, citing health and safety issues. While camping and outdoor education will continue to be the bedrock of the Girl Scout program, GSWPA is committed to responding to current trends and future needs of girls throughout its jurisdiction.
