Pittsburgh, PA – Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania (GSWPA) has received a $500 grant through the Disney Friends for Change Program. Funds from this grant will be used to purchase two rain barrels and one large capacity composter for environmental action projects at Camp Redwing in Butler County.

GSWPA’s program Earth Day: Water Wonders will be funded by this grant. This program will teach girls in grades K-5 the importance of clean water to a healthy environment. Helping to lead the program will be a group of 20 Girl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8) who are working on their “Leader in Action” award by leading younger Girl Scouts in their own environmental discoveries, as well as a group of 5-10 Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors (grades 9-12) who serve on the Camp Redwing Youth Program Team. In preparation for and during this event, the rain barrels will be installed at the camp as well as the composting station for reduction of camp waste, use for camp water activities and the building of a camp garden that will provide food for campers. In addition to being a memorable visual aid and teaching point for participating girls, having rain barrels, composting and gardening will help Camp Redwing lead by example to the estimated 1,400 campers who will participate in this year’s summer camp programs.
