Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania Receives Funding for
Healthy Living Special Initiatives From Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield

Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania (GSWPA) recently received a $20,000 grant from Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in support of the organization’s Healthy Living Special Initiatives for girls.

Healthy Living Special Initiatives, for girls in grades kindergarten through 8, respond to the unmet needs of girls by providing supportive and fun programming that sparks an interest in learning. The demand for this program is high, as it teaches girls skills that parents, schools and other organizations want for their girls, but do not necessarily have the time, resources or expertise to deliver. Healthy Living Programs are core to Girl Scouts’ expertise of equipping girls with positive values and leadership skills.

“Ensuring that children have access to resources that will help them maintain a healthy lifestyle has always been important to Highmark,” said Mary Anne Papale, Highmark’s director of community affairs. “We have chosen to support the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania because it provides children with the education tools they will need to adopt healthier habits, such as eating nutritious foods and increasing physical activity.”

These programs are designed to teach girls the aspects of a healthy lifestyle while providing experiences related to exercise, self-esteem, positive thinking, team work and overall happiness and wellness.

“Research shows that girls define their health in holistic terms, and place equal value on emotional and physical well-being,” said Patricia A. Burkart, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania CEO. “Thanks in part to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, we’re able to present programming that combines self-esteem, nutrition and exercise.”

GSWPA offers Healthy Living Special Initiatives in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Clearfield, Cambria, Crawford, Erie, Fayette, Greene, Warren and Washington counties.
