FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do I know what learning opportunities are required for my volunteer position?
You’ll find this information in Volunteer Essentials on page 98-99. You can also contact your membership manager or volunteer development manager for guidance.

How are volunteer enrichments, trainings and courses planned and scheduled?
An assessment of enrichments, trainings or courses needed by Girl Scout volunteers is conducted by our membership managers. This information is provided to our staff volunteer development managers who then contact our volunteer trainers to set up days, times and locations within the areas where learning opportunities are needed.

How do I receive information on new adult learning opportunities?
S’MORE Magazine includes descriptions of courses and a brief listing of volunteer learning opportunities being offered council-wide. However, all dates, times and locations of enrichments, trainings and courses are posted on a regular basis to the council Web site. Our e-newsletter, @aGirl (which can be received electronically or in hard copy format from membership managers on a bi-monthly basis) also lists these learning opportunities. Finally, membership and volunteer development managers use the Learning Post flyers to promote those events that are closest to you.

There are many useful workshops such as songs and games, traditions, ceremonies, etc. that I’d like to attend, but these don’t always match with my schedule. What can I do?
There are many seasoned volunteers – right within your own service unit – who may be available and interested in conducting a mini-workshop at service unit meetings. Informal learning opportunities such as conducting strategy cafés with volunteers in your area on budgeting, engaging parents, using new Journey books or sharing travel tips can also help give you new tools. Your membership manager, volunteer development manager and service unit manager can help to coordinate these requests.

How can I register for a learning opportunity?

Refer to your recent copy of S’MORE Magazine and submit the Learning Post Events Registration Form by mail to the Edinboro office, email to registrar@gswpa.org, or visit our new online registration system in September. Due to the high volume of trainings, phone registrations cannot be accepted.

Who needs to submit a volunteer application?

To ensure the safety of our girls and adults, all adults who volunteer with Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania and have direct contact with girls need to become members and complete the volunteer application process.

Where can I find procedures for taking my troop on an overnight trip?
Trip procedures can be found in the Volunteer Essentials Manual, page 120.

Does GSWPA run background checks on their volunteers?
Yes. Protecting our members is top priority. Screenings and reference checks are crucial parts of our process. Criminal background checks are performed by independent, third-party, background-screening agencies.
