The Butterfly Project

Butterfly Project

Troop 30421 from Erie, PA was inspired by the Holocaust Museum Houston to embark on a project to help recognize the children affected by the Holocaust. According to the museum’s website, 1.5 million children perished during the Holocaust, and it is told that they often wrote stories about never seeing butterflies throughout their perilous journey. To honor this important part of history, the museum is collecting 1.5 million hand-made, arts-and-crafts butterflies that will be showcased in an exhibition in the spring 2013.

Girl Scouts Troop 30421’s Leader, Darlene Seath, is helping her Girl Scouts coordinate the making of 30,421 butterflies that will be submitted to the museum for the exhibit. Troop members have already had success partnering with community members, local school districts, day cares and senior living communities, collecting more than 1,000 butterflies. Girl Scout Cadettes and Ambassadors from the troop are also hoping to use this project for their Girl Scout Bronze and Silver Awards this upcoming year.

If you or your troop/group would like to create butterflies to donate to Troop 30421’s project, please visit the Holocaust Museum Houston’s website for the creation guidelines. The deadline for submissions to the troop is the end of April 2012 and they can be dropped off at any Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania office or by calling Darlene Seath at 814-825-0066.
