We all know that high school is a time of great excitement...and
great stress. As a teen, you probably turn to your peers when you are
stressed or upset, but you may sometimes take on more than you can
handle when trying to help.
Join Girl Scouts Western
Pennsylvania for a very special fall retreat focusing on the mental
well-being of our teenager Girl Scouts and their friends. As part of
this retreat, Girl Scouts will become certified Teen Mental Health
First Aiders, while exploring and developing their very own self-care
plan.
Teen Mental Health First Aid is evidence-based
training that teaches teens in grades 9-12, or ages 14-18, how to
identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and
substance use challenges in their friends and peers.
You
don't have to take on friends' problems alone, and Teen Mental Health
First Aid training will teach you when and how to get an adult
involved. You won't talk about your own mental health, and you won't
learn to give therapy or diagnose a condition. However, you will learn
ways to engage in self-care, recognize when you might need support,
and practice skills to cope with common issues teens face.
Embracing and discovering wellness practices for yourself and
supporting others are two great ways to cope with anxiety and
uncertainty during this stage of life. Girl Scouts is pairing this
amazing certification program with GSUSA's Mental Wellness Patch
program and will include breaks between training sessions that offer a
variety of fun and simple self-care activities that girls can build
into their daily routines.
Adult supervision for the
duration of the event is required. Girl Scouts must attend with a
caregiver or troop leaders that meet ratio. All attending adults must
be registered members and background checked. No tagalongs are
permitted.
For troops taking Teen Mental Health First Aid
training, at least ONE adult volunteer with the troop MUST be
certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.
As part of
this event, staff will also be offering Youth Mental Health First Aid
training for interested adults at the same the girls are going through
Teen Mental Health First Aid Training. If volunteers are already
certified in YMHFA, they are not required to complete the training
again.
Due to the nature of this training and the topics
covered, the Teen Mental Health First Aid sessions will be just GSWPA
staff and teens.
This retreat is being subsidized by a grant.
