Camp generally has between 50-75 campers per week. As a counselor, you will be required to supervise the unit you are assigned to, which will vary in size depending on registrations and can fluctuate from week to week. When participating in all-camp, campfire, or special events, you may supervise more campers in other units as well.
Counselors live in the same unit as campers, but in separate tents/cabins/bedrooms, in order to provide supervision overnight. You will be living with other counselors, around 3-5 at any given time. Campers are not allowed in your living space.
On check-in and check-out days, we require staff to wear a camp-designated camp shirt. We will provide the shirt during staff training. We ask that you bring shorts/pants with you. It may be a good idea to purchase two pairs (just in case your laundry gets backed up!). For other non-designated days, you may wear appropriate summer attire such as t-shirts, athletic shorts, khaki shorts/pants, etc.
Yes! We expect all counselors to actively participate in the program. This includes supervision of campers, assisting program staff, and participating! We expect that the campers always come first in participation since camp is for the camper and that each counselor is sure to help campers participate in every activity.
Yes. Counselors have two hours off each day. There is a designated staff lounge at each camp for you to use during this time. During this time off, we request that you remain on camp. At the conclusion of camp on Friday, counselors have time off from around 2 p.m. on Friday (pending check-out, cleaning, etc.) to 10 a.m. on Sunday. During weekends off, you are welcome to either remain at camp or leave the camp property.
Meals, housing, and laundry are all included while you are at camp. If you choose to make arrangements outside of this (i.e., going to dinner off of camp during your time off or visiting friends off of camp), you are responsible for the cost of excursions and meals.
Staff are paid on a bi-monthly basis. You will want to bring money to camp with you to get through until your first paycheck. Camp does not provide cash advances.
At the conclusion of camp, you will need to make plans to move off camp, with the exact date TBD. The camp director will help you arrange travel plans for leaving camp and will try to provide reasonable accommodation.
Everyone at camp will work to support you with any need or question you may have. Before camp, reach out to the camp director. During camp, it is best to first reach out to your direct supervisor with any issues (i.e., if you are a general counselor, you would reach out to your unit leader first) and then reach out to administrative staff and/or the camp director. We are here to support you!

The number of campers can range from 10 to 25 girls. As a counselor, you will be required to supervise the unit you are assigned to, which will vary in size depending on camper registration and can fluctuate from week to week. Each week will meet the correct ratio of campers to counselors.
You will receive two camp shirts that should be worn while you are at camp. Appropriate summer attire such as athletic shorts or khaki shorts/pants can be worn with it. Closed-toed shoes should be worn, but you may also wear sports sandals depending on the activity.
Yes! We expect all counselors to actively participate in program activities. This includes supervision of the campers, assisting other program staff, and participating! We expect the campers to always come first in participation since camp is for the camper. Each counselor must help campers participate in every activity.
Camp runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. You will be expected to always meet the counselor-to-camper ratio, which means you are on duty for the whole day depending on how many counselors are working. There is a paid lunch and journal period (typically one hour) where you will still monitor campers but can rest and be at a separate table from girls while you eat.
Staff is paid hourly and will receive a paycheck on a bi-monthly basis.
If you have further questions before your arrival at Camp Redwing or Camp Hawthorne Ridge, please reach out to Ian Brown at ibrown@gswpa.org.
Please note: Along with being a Day Camp Counselor, you may also be an Activity Specialist who typically runs two-hour shifts during the evening, on weekends, and during the day when camp is not running. Activities include canoeing, archery, and lifeguarding.
Summer camp employees will participate in pre-camp training, assist in the daily operations of camp, have the ability to work as a team member, live in a camp community, and will change the life of a girl! Background checks are required.
For the safety of staff and campers, everyone on Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania camp property will be required to follow current CDC and local guidelines.
Applicants should complete the Camp Staff Application.
