Course Information:
* American Red Cross Shallow Water
Lifeguarding (up to 5', 6', or 7') Blended Learning Course
*
This is a blending learning course, which combines online learning
modules with in-person, instructor-led skills and scenarios. The
online portion must be completed PRIOR to the in-person session.
Registrants will receive an email with instructions on accessing and
completing online learning modules a minimum of two weeks in advance
of the in-person session.
* Course time (approximate): 6 hours
online, 24 hours in person
* PREREQUISITES: On the first day of
the in-person sessions, participants must successfully complete the
following skills:
1. Swim 100 yards continuously
2. Tread
water for 2 minutes using only the legs
3. Complete a timed
event within 50 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards,
submerging to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a10-pound object,
returning to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards on the back to
return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and
exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
Certification Information:
* Upon successfully passing the
course, participants will receive a certification from the American
Red Cross for Shallow Water Lifeguarding (up to 5', 6', or 7') that
will be valid for 2 years.
* This certification will allow GSWPA
volunteers to lifeguard for Girl Scout groups at any of our 3 camp
properties, as well as any pool or waterfront that is a maximum depth
of 7 feet.
* Through the American Red Cross, we can certify
participants 15 years of age or older, however, Girl Scouts Safety
Activity Checkpoints require lifeguards to be a minimum of 18 years
old to serve as a primary lifeguard at Girl Scout events (this
includes any camp or outdoor activity that involves swimming or
waterfront activities). Secondary lifeguards can be 16 or 17 if the
primary guard is 18 or older.
