At Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania, we are committed to providing high-quality and safe experiences for girls, helping them build skills, gain confidence, and make memories that last a lifetime.
We routinely review our properties and programs to ensure they meet safety standards, align with the Girl Scouts’ mission and the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, and can be reasonably and responsibly maintained by council.
Through this analysis, sometimes we must make changes to keep the council financially strong, so we can continue serving girls today and for years to come.
As we embark on a new Girl Scout year, several changes will help maintain the council’s financial health while continuing to serve girls, support volunteers, and engage families.
Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania is committed to providing the best possible outdoor experiences that Girl Scouts want and expect while using council resources wisely. To accomplish this, we are:
Maintaining three camps that are accessible to the different areas within our council and can best provide meaningful, safe, and fun adventures for girls: Camp Conshatawba in Cambria County, Camp Hawthorne Ridge in Erie County, and Camp Skymeadow in Armstrong County.
Camp Redwing in Butler County has been closed since June 25, 2025, to evaluate necessary repairs and updates to the water system and pool. During this time, we also sought ways to lessen the impact of creek flooding.
During this closure, many options were explored, including:
Replacing the water system in a location further from Connoquenessing Creek
Replacing the pool since repairs are not feasible due to the pool’s age and condition
Relocating the camp away from the flood area since occurrences of flooding have increased
After careful review of all options, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close and sell Camp Redwing, as costs to repair and maintain the camp have exceeded what the council can sustain, and relocating the camp away from the flood area is not feasible.
We understand it can be emotional for some members when a camp is sold, but please be assured we are focused on supporting Girl Scouts to have incredible outdoor experiences through other venues and programs. The council program team is working to move activities and events to other area locations and to the three remaining council camps.
The council will host a closing ceremony at Camp Redwing on Sunday, Nov. 2. Details will be shared at Fall Town Hall meetings.
Johnstown
The 3-story building in Johnstown far exceeds the space we need for council operations. We are looking for a smaller office to lease, and the current building will be listed for sale. Council operations, including the cookie cupboard, will continue in the current location until the building is sold.
Greensburg
Due to extensive repair and maintenance challenges at our Greensburg building, we have made the difficult decision to close the retail shop and office and list the building for sale. The last day the Greenburg shop will be open is Wednesday, October 8.
Council operations, including the cookie cupboard, will continue in the current location until the building is sold.
While the office is closing, our dedicated mobile staff will still be in the Greensburg area to support Girl Scouts and volunteers.
Customers can continue to shop for Girl Scout merchandise in person at pop-up and consignment shops, camp trading posts, and at our Edinboro and Pittsburgh retail shops. Merchandise can be conveniently ordered by phone, email, or online using our shop order form, with pickup options such as the office cookie cupboard during booth sale season. If you're ordering fun patches or pins, you can use our fun patch order form. Council staff may also assist with delivery to service units in the area.
Register for our Fall Town Hall meetings from 6-7:30 p.m. This governance-style meeting (for adult members, delegates, and Girl Scouts ages 14 and older) will provide council updates and board actions since our Annual Meeting held in April 2025.
